At Rowley Mile Equine, diagnostics sit at the core of how we practice. We bring high-level investigative capability directly to the horse, delivering accurate, timely assessments in the environment where performance matters most.
Our clinical decision-making is underpinned by an established network of referral centres and discipline-specific specialists. This enables a seamless progression from investigation to intervention, ensuring every case is managed with clarity, depth, and access to advanced expertise when required.
DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY
We utilise cutting-edge, portable, wireless, battery-operated radiography systems, enabling rapid image acquisition and immediate on-site interpretation. Our latest-generation units incorporate AI-assisted image processing, delivering consistently sharper, higher-definition radiographs and enhanced diagnostic clarity in the field.
ULTRASONOGRAPHY
We are equipped with high-quality mobile ultrasound systems, allowing detailed, real-time assessment across a broad range of clinical applications. Ultrasonography is central to our diagnostic approach, particularly in the evaluation of joints, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures, while also supporting reproductive, gastrointestinal, and respiratory examinations. This capability enables accurate on-site diagnosis, effective monitoring of injury and recovery, and informed clinical decision-making without unnecessary delay.
ENDOSCOPY
We are equipped with portable video endoscopes, allowing thorough assessment of both the upper and lower respiratory tract in the field. These systems provide high-quality visualisation, with the ability to record clear images and video footage to support diagnosis, case documentation, and ongoing management.
GASTROSCOPY
We operate a portable, high-definition gastroscopy system, allowing rapid and thorough assessment of the equine stomach in the horse’s normal environment. This enables accurate diagnosis of equine gastric ulcer syndrome, including both squamous and glandular disease, with immediate visualisation, documentation, and case-specific treatment planning.
EXERCISING ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG)
Exercise electrocardiography (ECG) can be arranged and performed to assess cardiac function under workload, helping to investigate performance-limiting arrhythmias and other exercise-related cardiac abnormalities that may not be evident at rest. We are also able to provide overnight ECG monitoring where indicated. All recordings are reviewed and interpreted by specialist equine cardiologists, ensuring accurate diagnosis and clear guidance on appropriate management and treatment when abnormalities are identified.
EXERCISING VIDEO-ENDOSCOPY
We can arrange overground dynamic endoscopic assessment of the upper respiratory tract, carried out in the horse’s normal training environment to evaluate airway function during exercise. Interpretation is undertaken in collaboration with experienced upper airway surgeons, allowing accurate diagnosis and clear, case-specific recommendations for appropriate medical or surgical management.
ADVANCED IMAGING
We maintain close working relationships with several leading referral hospitals, allowing us to direct cases to the most appropriate centres for advanced diagnostic imaging when required. This ensures seamless access to specialist facilities, including:

• Computed Tomography (CT)
• Gamma Scintigraphy (Bone Scan)
LABORATORY SERVICES
At Rowley Mile Equine, diagnostic testing is integrated into our clinical decision-making and supported by a dedicated interpretation service. We utilise a large, established reference laboratory to provide reliable results, typically available within 24 hours. Where immediate information is required, we also perform on-site inflammatory testing, including Serum Amyloid A (SAA), allowing real-time assessment and timely clinical intervention.
